3 Starter Weapons
Much like choosing Starter Pokémon, Mina begins her adventure with the choice of only 3 starter weapons - Nightstar, Whisper & Vesper, or the Blaststrike Maul. As you delve deeper into Tenebrous Isle, a couple of other weapons will become available.
While there is no right or wrong answer, Mina’s choice of weapon will greatly impact her gameplay on a moment-by-moment basis. Choosing a different weapon is almost like playing a whole new remix of the same game! What will your preferred playstyle be!?
NIGHTSTAR
Nightstar is Mina’s signature whip, offering a balanced and versatile combat style that emphasizes spatial control and deliberate positioning. It excels at striking from a mid-range distance, allowing you to punish enemies while keeping a safe buffer between you and danger. Its primary benefits lie in its ability to strike in four directions.
Its unique upgrade, the Dread Mace, imprints extra power into the tip of the whip for precise, high-damage strikes! The Afterstrike allows you to hold the attack button to emit a damaging energy pulse that can be "wiggled" around to catch nearby foes. This is the ideal choice for those who prefer a classic Castlevania-style reach over the raw speed of daggers or the slow, heavy commitment of the maul.
WHISPER & VESPER
Whisper and Vesper offer a radical departure from Mina’s other weapons, excelling at snappy, close-quarters combat, allowing you to shred through an enemy's health bar with a flurry of quick stabs that far outpace the recovery time of Mina’s other weapons.
Their greatest advantage is offering an aggressive playstyle. Low commitment for each swing means you can burrow away at a moment's notice, making them the perfect tools for a hit-and-run. The cadence of their short stabs may remind you a little of Link’s sword from Zelda II:The Adventure of Link!
The Lunging Cut upgrade propels Mina into the air, slicing through foes before gracefully bouncing off of them to safety. The Throwing Dagger upgrade lets you sneak in a long-ranged stab from afar, catching even the most fearsome foes off guard (don’t forget to pick it up again afterward!).
BLASTSTRIKE MAUL
A crushing weapon! The Blaststrike Maul is the definitive choice for players who favor high-risk, high-reward "heavy" gameplay, trading speed and precision for sheer concussive force. Despite leaving Mina more vulnerable during its slower attack wind-up, this is an indispensable tool for brute-forcing your way through the game's more resilient horrors.
Beyond its raw power, the maul features a unique mechanical twist: its chambered barrel allows it to be charged for an even more powerful blow. While Mina is charging the weapon, she also gains the ability to perform a short-range, tactical roll, which is unique to having the maul equipped. This roll might move her out of harm's way in a pinch, though it’s no substitute for burrowing into the ground.
When upgraded, the maul gains a Boom Charge, which releases a more powerful explosive strike when using a charged attack. The Spin Rush gives Mina a wild dash attack, propelled forward by the momentum of the maul’s spinning hammer head.
GUARDIAN CASKET
A sturdy shield concealing a deep secret, the Guardian Casket is a powerful and arcane defensive tool in the hands of a well-trained Hollower. While not much is known about its origin, it provides Mina with a formidable defensive presence, allowing you to hold your ground against heavy strikes and projectiles until the shield's durability "cracks."
Stretching its usefulness beyond defense, the casket also excels at aggressive play through shield bashes for crowd control and a high-skill parry mechanic that, when timed perfectly, negates damage while dealing massive knockback and counter-damage. The Grave Counter enhances the power of a perfect parry, while the Coffin Toss upgrade allows Mina to transform her defense into a ranged projectile attack (she can even use it as a platform!)
BATTERY BUSTER
The Battery Buster is a versatile hybrid weapon that bridges the gap between ranged assault and melee aggression. Its primary mechanic is its self-sustaining ammo economy. While in buster mode, Mina comes equipped with a powerful projectile-shooting blaster, which consumes energy with every shot.
Once depleted, it automatically transforms into a sturdy melee bat. By switching to battery mode, you actively recharge the buster’s ammo clip with every attack on an enemy, building to a rhythmic combat flow where you pepper foes from afar before charging in to replenish your resources.
Once upgraded, hold the attack button to charge an immensely powerful Burst Shot. When swapped to battery mode, hold for a meaty Charge Swing, which will fill your ammo clip to full much faster when attacking an enemy!
